After what has felt like an eternity of delays for even the most patient of fans, Top Gun 2, called Top Gun: Maverick, is almost here.

The sequel was originally scheduled to arrive in theatres in July 2019, but it now appears that it will arrive in May 2022. Don’t worry, when we typed that, we crossed every digit and touched every piece of wood in the room.

On March 29, 2022, Paramount produced a new trailer for the film to promote its release, so we’d like to think it means there won’t be another delay.

Don’t worry, since star Jon Hamm promised in September 2020 that it would be worth the wait and that it will be “everything you hope it will be.” Fans of Top Gun, on the other hand, will be the ones to decide.

So, as we all wait a few more months to see Top Gun: Maverick, here’s all you need to know about it.

When will Top Gun 2 be released in theatres? When will Top Gun Maverick be released in theatres?

Before we get into all the delays, let’s get to the point. Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theatres in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2022, and in the United States on May 27, 2022.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix and Apple approached Paramount Pictures to see if they could buy the film for a streaming premiere. However, Paramount has decided to release the film in theatres, which is fantastic.

If the Top Gun release date stays true, the sequel will hit theatres just under three years after its planned July 12, 2019 release date. After a year’s delay, the date was pushed ahead to June 24, 2020 in the United States and July 17, 2020 in the United Kingdom.

The sequel was then moved back to December 23, 2020, and that wasn’t the end of it. Paramount then pushed the sequel back to July 2, 2021, only to have it pushed back again to November 19, 2021.

Unfortunately, that was not the final delay; nevertheless, we are now (hopefully) at the end of the journey.

From May 2018 through June 2019, the sequel was being filmed. In essence, it was a long time ago, so good luck to the cast in recalling what transpired during the promotional tour.

We all rightfully praise Tom Cruise for this stunt but we also need to talk about camera operator Craig O’Brian, who did an amazing job photographing this incredible sequence https://t.co/Cp4Bi7NyJJ
