After years of rumors and hearsay, Microsoft finally announced an all-new Fable title last year for the Xbox Series X/S console during its Xbox Games Showcase. But, despite being one of the biggest reveals from the event (alongside the first gameplay footage for Halo Infinite), very little was confirmed outside of its CGI teaser. Even now, the only other thing people know about it is that Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series, is developing it. But, one piece of new information may have been discovered and, of course, it comes from a job listing.

Interestingly, the job listing is not from Playground Games, but Turn 10 Studios, which is responsible for the Forza Motorsport series. A new entry in that series was also announced at last year’s showcase with a brief teaser trailer, simply titled Forza Motorsport, and is in development for the Xbox Series X/S as well.

What does this have to do with Fable? The listing is for a software engineer to work on the studio’s ForzaTech engine, which is used for both the Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon games. However, the listing also specifically mentions the upcoming Fable game as well, stating that it too will be using the ForzaTech engine and will be open world.

It’s arguably not too surprising to learn that the new Fable will feature an open-world, considering both Fable 2 and Fable 3 were open-world action RPGs as well. But this was a detail that wasn’t entirely confirmed. In fact, around the time of its announcement, there was some speculation that it would be an MMO instead, although some insiders refuted this and claimed that it will indeed be another open-world action RPG.

It’s been over ten years since the last mainline Fable game released. In that time, there were spin-offs such as the 2012 beat ’em up Fable Heroes and 2017’s digital card game Fable Fortune. By all accounts, it sounds like this new one will be a more traditional experience, but there have been rumors of it containing online features as well. What Fable 4’s online features could be are unknown, with some theorizing that there will be online co-op.

With how little info there is, it’s very likely that Fable is still a long way away from actually releasing. Plus, Playground Games also has its hands full with the next Forza Horizon title, which is believed to be releasing this year. Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but the latest rumors suggest that Forza Horizon 5 will take place in Mexico.

Fable is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
