Legendary theatre director, Peter Brook takes his last breath on Saturday. He dies at the age of 97, his publisher said on Sunday.
He was one of the most innovative theatre directors who excelled in the art of staging powerful drama in bizarre venues.
The English director has ranged from the challenging version of Shakespeare through international opera to Hindu epic poems.
He had won many Tony and Emmy awards, a Laurence Olivier award, the Japanese Praemium Imperiale, and the Prix Italia. He was also awarded India’s fourth highest civilian honour, Padma Shri in 2021 for his valuable contribution to art.
“His 1970 Stratford production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, played all in white and with a huge garlanded swing, secured his place in the annals of theatre history”, a source as per Indian Express.
In 1951, Brook married actress Natasha Perry. They had two children, Irina who is an actress and director, and Simon who is a director.
Nick Hern Books (a company that publishes plays, theatre books, and screenplays) takes on Twitter to express their grief for Brook.
