Scott Derrickson is the director of the critically-acclaimed and commercially successful MCU film Doctor Strange. Derrickson was originally slated to direct its sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but unfortunately left the project in its early stages due to creative differences. Now, Derrickson has publicly admitted that he is open to working with Marvel Studios again on a future film project.

Derrickson made a name for himself making horror films in the 21st century. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Derrickson’s feature debut, was praised for its original approach to the exorcism subgenre, as it combined supernatural horror with legal drama. After that, Derrickson directed the Day the Earth Stood Still remake and two more groundbreaking horror films, Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil. Derrickson famously brought his signature horror film imagination to Doctor Strange, and its title character has since become a fan favorite among MCU fans.

Derrickson went to Twitter to publicly announce his desire to work with Marvel Studios again. He broke the news with a single sentence, saying, “I loved working with Marvel and would absolutely do it again.” While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be helmed by original Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi, fans would undoubtedly love to see Derrickson direct another MCU film in the future, as Derrickson’s original approach to the genre has caused fans to imagine other superhero movies the filmmaker could direct. Of course, Derrickson remained on board Doctor Strange 2 as an executive producer.

Fans of Derrickson and Doctor Strange will be able to see the director’s next film sooner than they may have thought. His next horror/thriller, The Black Phone, releases in theaters in June and stars Ethan Hawke as a mysterious child kidnapper. The film is made by Universal and Blumhouse Productions and will be the first feature film by Derrickson since Doctor Strange’s release in November 2016. Fans are excited for The Black Phone, as it represents a return to Derrickson’s horror roots sewn by previous films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister.

It may be disappointing that Derrickson was unable to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it is a cause of hope knowing that Derrickson may be able to make another MCU film in the future. Here’s hoping that Marvel Studios finds a way to continue its partnership with Derrickson on another project soon.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 6, 2022.
