Destiny 2 plays host to a number of references to old, obscure lore from the series’ earliest beginnings, but the upcoming Witch Queen DLC seems to be brimming with secrets. With the Collectors’ Edition of the DLC already in players’ possession, a keen-eyed Guardian has noticed a curious hidden message on the game box.

Veteran Destiny 2 players will know that Bungie often ends up hiding a few tidbits of lore in unexpected places with DLC and Season releases, and Witch Queen is no exception. The message in question is rather cryptic overall - which is par the course for Destiny lore - but it clearly references the ancient Leviathan of Fundament, an ancient creature of Light from the so-called Books of Sorrow.

As Collectors’ Editions of Witch Queen have arrived early, players have quickly begun to unravel the various secrets contained within the DLC’s box, it seems to have been easy to miss the lines hidden in the packaging itself. These have since been discovered after all, and then posted on the game’s secret-focused subreddit, r/raidsecrets. The implications of the line are certainly interesting, as lore buffs have quickly pointed out.

The quote itself is a pointed reference to old Hive lore from the original Destiny game. While it’s pretty obvious that Witch Queen would feature Hive culture first and foremost, the line featured here is the Worm Gods’ statement on the nature of Light and its long-dead representative, the Leviathan of Fundament. This is yet another suggestion that huge reveals could be coming with Witch Queen, similar to the strange depiction of Oryx in Witch Queen trailers.

While there’s no telling yet whether the Worm Gods themselves will be making an appearance in this chapter of Destiny 2, it’s plenty obvious that Bungie has a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to Witch Queen and its potentially game-changing lore. Theorycrafting about what Witch Queen means to Destiny at large continues to gain momentum, with discussions bound to continue well into the release of this new DLC.

Bungie has also confirmed already that Savathûn is unlikely to die during Witch Queen, as its intention is to keep her around in some form to continue the narrative. Players remain uncertain as to what the Hive’s control over Light may mean for the future of Destiny, and it would seem that this is precisely what Bungie has been getting at all along. Witch Queen is set to launch on February 22nd, and questions are bound to keep piling up until the day finally comes.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
